Brendan's Birthday Party - Brendan's place - December 2007 |
 |
Brendan's cozy home twinkled and shone like a
cross between a sacred candlelit cathedral and a
little toy tinsel-town in all its intricate
Christmas-y details. In December, the McGowan
family welcomed the Rotaract Club of Boston into
their home in honor of their son's birthday,
tempting our senses with magnificent lasagna,
homemade salad, and a enticing array of cakes,
cookies, and chocolate candies. Brendan guided
us through a tour of the many displays that
ornamented his home, from a decades-old
Pinocchio occupying his traditional corner of
the living room to an entire holiday-decorated
replica of the famed Green Monster. As
Brendan's birthday party allowed for an evening
of jokes and stories exchanged around the table
and the making of friends out of newcomers,
Boston Rotaractors were united in stronger
community spirit and were furthered in their
desire for deepened friendship.

Christmas 2007 Potluck
Party - Matylda's place - December 2007 |
 |
On Saturday,
December 1, Rotaract Vice President emeritus Matylda
Tomaszczyk graciously opened her host family's home for
a lovely holiday get-together. Friends, old and new,
gathered for a potluck dinner, traditional Yuletide
carols, and the camaraderie which all Rotaractors share.
Rotaractors even got to put "service above self" once
more -- when they helped put the finishing touches on
Matylda's Christmas tree. We closed the night with a
relaxed conversation next to a fire place which lasted
until early morning hours. |

International Potluck
Party - Shannon's place - February 2007 |
 |
On
February 11th 2007, 11 members of Rotaract and two
non-member friends came together at the President’s
house for a social activity. Attendees brought cultural
delights from all over the world, including: cheese
quiche from Serbia, breaded chicken from Ukraine, Thai
pasta salad, braided
Swabian bread, and a “melktart” dessert from South
Africa. After eating, members played games of pool, and
watched a movie called “Weird Science,” which served as
“typical U.S. 80’s comic relief,” before many had to
return to their college studies. |

Movie night
"Inconvenient
Truth" - Matylda's place - January 2007 |
 |
On January 28th, 2007, over 25 members of Boston
Rotaract and their friends gathered at the Vice
President’s house for a screening and discussion of
Al Gore’s film “An Inconvenient Truth.” The hosts
provided delicious popcorn, snacks, drinks and
pizza. After the film, attendees discussed various
environmental issues, including: pollution, carbon
trading, recycling, energy-efficient living, and
power plants. The evening was designed to raise
funds for an environmental project. Funds
collected were put towards planting 1000 trees in
Ethiopia
where they will remove 25 tons of green house gases
every year. This is done through the NGO “Trees for the Future” (http://www.treesftf.org/main.htm).

Pool night -
Jillians, Boston - November 2006 |
 |
In
November 2006 our members decided to have a little fun
and meet up for an evening of pool and refreshments.
After showing our skills (or lack thereof :) on the
tables, a little time was well spent enjoying some food
and drinks as well as learning a little more about each
other. |

 |
Over 10 people from Boston Rotaract attended Rotary-UN
Day on November 4th. The event was held inside the
United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York City .
Through presentations and networking, participants
learned how Rotary Clubs around the world reach out to
those in need to provide drinking water and other
humanitarian services. Senior officials from the UN
applauded Rotarians for their dedication to promoting
peace. Participants were also informed by these
officials on global issues that need urgent attention,
such as the genocide in Darfur, Sudan and global

Pool party -
Matylda's place - June 2006 |
 |
The
2005-06 season was a successful time for Boston
Rotaract. Our group elected the organization's first
board members, and on June 18th, 2006, we celebrated
our club's growth and accomplishments with a Pool Party
hosted by the club's Vice President and her Family.
Members and their friends enjoyed the warm Sunday
afternoon swimming, laughing, and snacking on a
buffet-style dinner. Our Guest Speaker, Erin Fleming,
added to this event with her powerful presentation about
her community service trip to Nigeria. |
